Russian lawmakers set presidential vote for March – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
SUMMARY: Russian lawmakers have set the date for the country's 2024 presidential election for March 17, potentially allowing President Vladimir Putin to seek a fifth term in office. Under constitutional reforms, Putin could remain in power until 2036. His victory in the election is expected, as most of his prominent critics are either in jail or living abroad, and independent media has been banned. Only two people have announced plans to run, but getting on the ballot will be difficult due to the requirement of gathering tens of thousands of signatures. The central election commission is also considering online voting and a three-day voting period, which will limit the possibility of independent observers.
