Judge rules against City of Austin over South Central Waterfront funding
SUMMARY: A group of Austin property taxpayers sued the city for using property tax dollars to redevelop the South Central Waterfront District, including the old Statesman building. The lawsuit argued against using tax dollars for this purpose. A judge ruled in favor of the taxpayers, stating that the city violated state law by approving the use of property tax dollars for the project. The approved Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) would have diverted $354 million over 19 years. The decision allows the tax money to be used for public needs. The city is seeking community feedback for the future development of the area south of Lady Bird Lake.
