Van Zandt County Commissioner killed after tree falls on truck during storms
SUMMARY: Van Zandt County Commissioner Virgil Melton died during severe weather while returning home from his grandchild's baseball game, 20 miles east of Tyler. A tree fell on Melton's car, killing him and injuring his wife, who is now in ICU. County Judge Andy Reese described Melton as the “rock of the county” since he took office in 2007, helping the county recover from several tornadoes, the latest in 2019. Melton's death comes as Van Zandt County and Smith County, hard-hit by storms, are managing power outages and extensive damage. Plans to honor Melton will be arranged once his wife recovers.
Commissioner Virgil Melton and his wife were coming back from their grandkid's baseball game. The two barely crossed into Edom when a tree fell on their car. Melton was killed instantly. His wife is in the ICU.

What’s going on with the Lake Livingston Dam? KPRC 2 digs into the problem, finds answers on the fix
SUMMARY: This report highlights two significant issues discovered along the Trinity River, affecting the dam and surrounding infrastructure. The first issue, found in May, involves erosion around a westward training wall, leading to partial failure. The second, discovered last week, involves severe erosion at the base of a support structure near the dam's apron, prompting federal emergency alerts. In response, the Trinity River Authority is taking three major actions: lowering Lake Livingston's water level, moving 100 truckloads of rock daily, and pumping concrete for essential repairs. These measures aim to ensure the dam's safety before any tropical storms hit, with final repairs expected by month's end.
Nearly a week after the Trinity River Authority declared a “potential failure watch” for the Lake Livingston Dam, we're learning about the damage done during flooding earlier this year.

Hurricane Beryl causes death and destruction in parts of Caribbean | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: Jamaica is preparing for Hurricane Barrel, a Category 4 storm, impacting nearly 3 million residents. The hurricane has already caused significant damage and fatalities in the Southeast Caribbean. Prime Minister declared the island a disaster area with a state of emergency for at least seven days, ordering curfews and evacuations in low-lying areas. Despite weakening from Category 5, Barrel's 140 mph winds pose a severe threat with potential for life-threatening storm surges, flooding, and damaging waves. The storm previously devastated several Caribbean islands, including St. Vincent, the Grenadines, and Grenada, destroying homes, buildings, and vital infrastructure. Barrel is expected to weaken further as it moves towards the Cayman Islands and Yucatan Peninsula.
