Van Zandt Co. commissioner killed by falling tree
SUMMARY: Van Zandt County Commissioner Virgil Melton, the county's most senior commissioner, tragically died during Monday night's severe weather. He and his wife left a grandchild's baseball game early to avoid the storm, but a tree fell on their truck, killing Melton instantly. His wife is in intensive care. The area, including Edom, was already experiencing storm damage from last month. Melton, who took office in 2007 after serving in the Marines, was highly respected for his integrity and leadership.
