SUMMARY: Traces of bird flu (H5N1) have been detected in Austin's wastewater, though officials assure the public that the risk is low. Testing wastewater for diseases, a practice ramped up during the pandemic, is an early warning system. The Texas Epidemic Public Institute identified the virus, but no human cases have been reported locally. Officials advise avoiding contact with infected animals and not consuming raw or unpasteurized milk. Texas had one human case in April linked to dairy cows, the first known instance of human bird flu transmission from cows. Recently, a man in Mexico died from a subtype of bird flu.

Traces of bird flu have been found in Austin's wastewater, but local health officials say the risk to the public is low.

SUMMARY: President Joe Biden remains in the presidential race despite some pressure from within the Democratic Party to withdraw after a troubling debate performance. Biden’s administration and campaign are filling his schedule with public appearances and private meetings, aiming to recover from the debate setback. Campaign efforts focus on reassuring donors and minimizing defections among Democratic lawmakers. A new campaign ad seeks to bolster voter confidence. Some Democrats worry about the potential impact on down-ballot races if Biden continues. Meanwhile, former President Trump is preparing to accept the GOP nomination. The Democratic timeline is tight, hinging on Biden’s decisions.

President Biden met with Democratic governors on Wednesday in a closed door meeting to discuss the future of his campaign. The White House has been attempting to calm down fears among donors and the party’s base after Biden struggled in the debate against Donald Trump.
