SMU student documenting hidden history of Oak Cliff Freedmen’s Town
SUMMARY: Science, technology, storytelling, and history converge to document Oak Cliff's once-thriving Freedman's Town, established in 1867 and now designated both locally and nationally as the 10th Street Historic District. SMU PhD student Katie Cross uses GIS mapping to explore the community's hidden past. The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and other groups help preserve historical gravesites. Tech company Kin Kofa, co-founded by Tamisha Rud Ridge and Jordan Brunson, collaborates with Cross to map the neighborhood's 100-year transformation and uncover its rich history. They seek to connect descendants to the area's legacy, aiming to enrich Dallas' future by understanding its past.
The Oak Cliff Freedmen's Town has both local and national historic designation, and an SMU researcher using geographic information systems (GIS) mapping to document the Freedmen's Town's hidden history.

What’s going on with the Lake Livingston Dam? KPRC 2 digs into the problem, finds answers on the fix
SUMMARY: This report highlights two significant issues discovered along the Trinity River, affecting the dam and surrounding infrastructure. The first issue, found in May, involves erosion around a westward training wall, leading to partial failure. The second, discovered last week, involves severe erosion at the base of a support structure near the dam’s apron, prompting federal emergency alerts. In response, the Trinity River Authority is taking three major actions: lowering Lake Livingston’s water level, moving 100 truckloads of rock daily, and pumping concrete for essential repairs. These measures aim to ensure the dam’s safety before any tropical storms hit, with final repairs expected by month’s end.
Nearly a week after the Trinity River Authority declared a “potential failure watch” for the Lake Livingston Dam, we’re learning about the damage done during flooding earlier this year.

Hurricane Beryl causes death and destruction in parts of Caribbean | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: Jamaica is preparing for Hurricane Barrel, a Category 4 storm, impacting nearly 3 million residents. The hurricane has already caused significant damage and fatalities in the Southeast Caribbean. Prime Minister declared the island a disaster area with a state of emergency for at least seven days, ordering curfews and evacuations in low-lying areas. Despite weakening from Category 5, Barrel's 140 mph winds pose a severe threat with potential for life-threatening storm surges, flooding, and damaging waves. The storm previously devastated several Caribbean islands, including St. Vincent, the Grenadines, and Grenada, destroying homes, buildings, and vital infrastructure. Barrel is expected to weaken further as it moves towards the Cayman Islands and Yucatan Peninsula.
Hurricane Beryl has already caused death and destruction in parts of the Caribbean. Now, the powerful storm is heading toward Jamaica.
