TS Alberto’s storm surge eats away at Bolivar Peninsula sand dunes

Published

www.youtube.com – KPRC 2 Click2Houston – 2024-06-20 22:24:37

SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Alberto's storm surge caused significant damage to the Barrier Islands, particularly on the Bolivar Peninsula. The storm surge, reaching up to 4 feet, eroded sand dunes designed to protect the area, leaving backyards covered in debris. At Crystal Beach, Gage Golding from KPRC 2 reported that dunes up to 12 feet high were completely washed away, almost reaching the homes' pilings. This early-season disturbance highlights the vulnerability of the coastline. County is assessing the damage and planning recovery efforts. With another tropical system forming in the Gulf, time is a critical concern for rebuilding protective dunes.

The Houston area dodged the worst of Tropical Storm Alberto, but that doesn't mean we got away without a scratch.

SUMMARY: The National Hurricane Center’s 7 a.m. advisory reports that the hurricane remains a Category 3 with 120 mph winds, impacting the Cayman Islands, where hurricane warnings are in effect. The storm, though downgraded from Category 4, is still powerful. It is expected to make landfall south of Cancun early tomorrow as potentially a Category 1 hurricane, then move across the Yucatan into the southern Gulf of Mexico. A second landfall is likely south of Brownsville, near the Mexico-South Texas border, early Monday. Long-range models suggest the storm could eventually impact parts of Central and North Texas.

Hurricane Beryl was dropped to a Category 3 hurricane, but it is still a dangerous storm. FOX 4 meteorologist Kylie Capps shows the storms latest track, including the increasing chances that it will make landfall in Texas.
