Around 100 drownings occur yearly in the U.S. because of rip currents, with over 80% of rescues involving them. Rip currents are narrow, fast-flowing water channels moving away from the beach and can be hard to detect. Swimmers caught in rip currents should avoid panic, swim parallel to the shore, and seek lifeguard assistance. The National Weather Service and NOAA have developed early warning systems to predict rip current conditions up to six days in advance.

4-year-old girl dies after being left unattended inside vehicle in northwest Houston, police say
