Stranded hiker rescued thanks to iPhone SOS feature

SUMMARY: Last week, a hiker named Juanarez fractured her leg while hiking in the Los Angeles National Forest. Despite being in a remote area without cell service, Juanarez was able to use her iPhone 14's emergency SOS feature to contact first responders via satellite connection. This is the third satellite call that the L.A County search and rescue team has received this month. In previous instances, an iPhone's emergency text and an SOS message sent by a stranded group of teenagers led rescuers to their location. Personal location beacons and soon-to-be-available satellite communication on certain Android phones offer similar functionalities. For Juanarez, her phone was her lifeline and saved her life.

A stranded hiker in a remote Los Angeles canyon had no service but had her iPhone 14 which has a new SOS feature that allows a 911 call to go via satellite. NBC ' Erin McLaughlin has more details on the rescue.
