El Paso City Council approves decrease in city property tax rate

SUMMARY: The El Paso City Council has voted to decrease the local property tax rate from 86.2 cents to 83.2 cents. However, this does not guarantee that all property owners will see a smaller tax bill due to rising home values. The value of taxable property in the city has increased this year compared to last year. The decrease in the tax rate is expected to be offset by an increase in taxable values of approximately $3.65 billion due to new construction and rising home valuations. The City Council also approved an early payout of $41 million in debt using the expected surplus and reserves. The proposed budget includes investments in public safety, infrastructure projects, and new amenities. There will be no increase in city employee care costs. A notice will be published to inform the public about the tax rate, and there will be public comments and a final vote from the City Council.

SUMMARY: A driver, 36-year-old Alex Tuan Vuong, has been arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid after allegedly hitting and killing 10-year-old Mohammad Khel on July 4th in Harris County, Texas. Mohammad was struck by a dark SUV while riding his bicycle in the Grand Oaks subdivision. Vuong is currently held in the Harris County jail. Investigators reported that after running a stop sign and hitting Mohammad, the driver continued for nearly a mile with the boy’s bike wedged underneath, before stopping to remove it at Greenhouse and Kieth Harrow.
