19-year-old bitten by shark in Galveston off Jamaica Beach during vacation – Houston Public Media
SUMMARY: A teenager vacationing with her family in Galveston was bitten on the hand by a shark near Jamaica Beach. Damiana Humphrey told Fox 26 that she was waist-deep in the water when the shark bit her hand, and she started punching it. She underwent surgery afterward. Chief Peter Davis of Galveston Beach Patrol noted that such shark incidents are rare, occurring roughly every two to three years, despite the island's 8 million annual tourists. Most bites are believed to be cases of mistaken identity. Tips to avoid shark encounters include avoiding schooling fish, shuffling feet, swimming without bleeding wounds, and avoiding areas where water bodies empty into the Gulf. Galveston Island has recorded only 17 shark bites in the past century.

SUMMARY: Tina Knowles, Beyoncé's mom, owns a beach house in Galveston valued at $1.4 million, which has deteriorated severely since Hurricane Ike struck nearly 16 years ago. Despite repairs, the house, now on the beach, is considered a nuisance by Pirates Beach residents and the City of Galveston and poses public safety risks. The city is moving forward with a demolition order, offering $150,000 for relocation. Initially admired by neighbors for her celebrity status, the prolonged disrepair has changed perceptions. Knowles has until 60 days to respond before demolition proceeds amidst safety concerns.
