Texas Animation Studio Fights ‘Oscars’ For Nomination and WINS

Published

on

SUMMARY: Richard Linklater's film “Apollo 10 and a Half: A Space-Age Childhood” faced drama at the Academy Awards when it was disqualified from the Best Animated Feature category. The Academy claimed the film wasn't true animation. Craig Staggs and Steph Swope from Minnow Mountain Animation Studio, which worked on the film, discuss the controversy and how they fought the decision. Despite the setback, they ultimately won the appeal. The episode also discusses the use of AI in animation and the future of the industry. The film is available to watch on Netflix.

Steph, Craig, and 40 other animators spent years animating their new film Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood only to be told that it wouldn't be considered as an animated movie for the ‘The Best Animated Feature Award'.

They created the film using a notoriously time-consuming form of animation called ‘Rotoscoping' where the artists creates animated sequences by tracing over live-action footage frame by frame.

They join us to discuss the controversy around their film, how they fought (and won) against the Oscar's decision, and proved their film was animated.
