6.2 magnitude earthquake in northwestern China kills at least 111 people in Gansu and Qinghai provinces

SUMMARY: At least 111 people were killed and more than 200 injured in a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in a mountainous region in northwestern China. The quake occurred in Gansu and Qinghai provinces, with most deaths in Gansu. There was damage to water, electricity, transportation, and communications infrastructure. Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for an all-out search and rescue effort. Tents, folding beds, and quilts were being sent to the disaster area. The earthquake was felt in Lanzhou, about 1,450 kilometers southwest of Beijing. This is the deadliest earthquake in China since at least 2013, and China’s deadliest earthquake in recent years was a 7.9 magnitude quake in 2008 that killed nearly 90,000 people in Sichuan.

Non-emergency numbers should be used to report illegal fireworks. Allowed without a permit are Snake, Glow Worms, Smoke Devices, Wire Sparklers, and Trick Noisemakers.
