Austin-based Black Mamas Village debuts new community hub

SUMMARY: Austin-based community organization Black Mamas Village has celebrated the grand opening of The Village Place, a 6,500-square-foot community hub located on North Interstate 35. Black Mamas Village was created in 2019 to address the isolating effects of Austin's rapid growth. The Village Space aims to cover a variety of needs community members have, including sisterhood and social gatherings, culture and productivity, economic empowerment, and community building. The grand opening event included a garden dedication, networking opportunities, professional headshots, kids-centered activities, and pop-up shops. The organization is dedicated to providing a physical location for Black mothers to gather.

How to get a fireworks permit in Austin, other things to know

SUMMARY: In Austin, using or selling fireworks is illegal without a permit from AFD Special Events, costing $200. Permits for aerial displays require a 30-day notice, while flame acts need 14 days. Necessary documents include a site plan, pyrotechnic operator license, fireworks list, and insurance. State Fire Marshal's Office permit is also needed. Non-emergency numbers should be used to report illegal fireworks. Allowed without a permit are Snake, Glow Worms, Smoke Devices, Wire Sparklers, and Trick Noisemakers.
