Austin seeks federal funds to transform abandoned railroad tracks into future trail
SUMMARY: The City of Austin is seeking federal grant funding of up to $25 million to transform an abandoned railroad track in south Austin into a new trail system. The project, known as the Bergstrom Spur Trails to Transit, is planned to be six miles long and designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, address environmental justice and racial equity, and reduce barriers to opportunity. The city plans to offer a funding match of $6.25 million if the project is awarded federal dollars. The trail is in the design phase, and construction could begin as early as summer 2024 if funding is secured.
