Lee’s Golden Dragon, one of Houston’s oldest lion dance group, celebrates its 50th anniversary
SUMMARY: Allen Lee founded Lee's Golden Dragon in 1974 in Houston to preserve the cultural tradition of lion dancing. Initially lacking organized teams in the area, Lee aimed to pass on this art form to future generations. The lion dance, historically meant to ward off evil spirits, is now believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Lee's troupe combines cultural music, dance, acrobatics, and daring stunts. Despite recruitment challenges due to the sport's demands, the group has grown and performs at various events. Lee, a dentist by day, remains devoted to lion dancing, celebrating his troupe's 50th anniversary this year.
