Beryl becomes first hurricane of the season, moves toward Barbados – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
SUMMARY: Hurricane Beryl, the first hurricane of the season, has rapidly intensified and is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surges to the Windward Islands, specifically impacting Barbados. The storm may cause up to six inches of rain and waves as high as 13 feet. The 2024 hurricane season is predicted to be highly active, with up to 25 named storms and several major hurricanes. SUMMARY: An Austin man, 69-year-old Scott Sims, died while hiking in the Grand Canyon National Park, according to the National Park Service. Sims was trying to reach Phantom Ranch via the South Kaibab Trail. Around 7 p.m. Saturday, he was found unconscious on the River Trail. Bystanders performed CPR until paramedics arrived from Phantom Ranch, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. An investigation into his death is ongoing. The National Park Service advises against hiking the inner canyon between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. due to extreme temperatures that can reach over 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
