Campaign Context: What the data says about Sen. Cruz’s illegal immigration claims
SUMMARY: Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz is criticizing President Biden on the topic of the border and is seeking reelection. He claims that when Biden took office, he inherited the lowest illegal immigration rate in 45 years. Cruz's claim is based on apprehension data, with numbers jumping from approximately 405,000 in fiscal year 2020 to more than 1.7 million in fiscal year 2021. He attributes the surge to the Biden Administration's policies, as well as growing instability in Central American countries and eased COVID-19 restrictions. This contrasts with data from the Trump Administration, where apprehensions spiked in 2019 but decreased in 2020, leading up to the transition.

Families sue Houston’s Surrogacy Escrow Account Management, claiming owner pocketed money meant for childbirth planning
SUMMARY: At least 24 families in Houston accuse Dominique Side, owner of Surrogacy Escrow Account Management LLC (SEAM), of misusing funds meant for surrogacy services. The money, intended for healthcare and compensation costs, was allegedly diverted to finance Side's luxurious lifestyle and various businesses, including a music career. Side, who calls herself a “serial entrepreneur,” did not attend a recent court hearing where a judge ordered her assets frozen. The lawsuit highlights the families' losses and potential nationwide victims. Side's business partner acknowledged issues with the funds. The FBI has appealed for more potential victims to come forward.

NW Houston office building’s mailboxes raided two times, leaving 3 dozen tenants’ boxes broken into
SUMMARY: In northwest Houston, a man was caught on camera stealing mail from over three dozen mailboxes at an office building on West 34th Street. The thief, seen in a green shirt, used a master key to access and steal mail on two consecutive days. The building’s owner, attorney Larry Longer, reported the thefts to the Houston Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. To prevent further incidents, Longer has advised tenants against leaving outgoing mail in the boxes and is personally delivering incoming mail to tenants. Longer is also monitoring his own bank accounts for any suspicious activity.
