abc13.com – AP – 2024-07-03 18:31:46

SUMMARY: Scientists have discovered fossils of Gaiasia jennyae, a giant salamander-like predator that dominated waters 40 million years before dinosaurs. Fossil remnants found in Namibia show the creature had a wide, flat head and sharp fangs, using its front teeth to capture prey. Michael Coates likened its feeding to an “aggressive stapler.” The findings, published in Nature, offer new insights into early tetrapods and suggest they may have lived in colder climates earlier than previously thought. This challenges existing theories about their evolution and spread, indicating a more complex history of tetrapod origins. The predator's name honors both its discovery location and late paleontologist Jennifer Clack.
