Deadline to file for 2019 tax refund is Monday, July 17, 2023; IRS says there is nearly $1.5B in unclaimed refunds

SUMMARY: Taxpayers who forgot to file their taxes in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 have until Monday to do so, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Almost 1.5 million taxpayers may still be eligible for a tax refund from tax year 2019, with an estimated $1.5 billion in refunds remaining unclaimed. Taxpayers have a three-year window to file and claim their refunds, but the deadline has been extended to July 17 due to the pandemic. There is no penalty for filing late if a taxpayer is owed a refund. The average unclaimed refund for tax year 2019 is $893, but those who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) could be eligible for up to $6,557. Taxpayers who haven’t filed for 2020 and 2021 may have their 2019 refunds withheld.

SUMMARY: A driver, 36-year-old Alex Tuan Vuong, has been arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid after allegedly hitting and killing 10-year-old Mohammad Khel on July 4th in Harris County, Texas. Mohammad was struck by a dark SUV while riding his bicycle in the Grand Oaks subdivision. Vuong is currently held in the Harris County jail.
