Elephant returns to Thailand for medical care after years of alleged abuse in Sri Lanka – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

SUMMARY: An elephant named Muthu Raja, or Pearly King in Sri Lanka and Sak Surin, or Mighty Surin in Thailand, has been returned to Thailand for medical treatment. The elephant was sent to Sri Lanka as a gift in 2001 and was allegedly abused and mistreated at a Buddhist temple. A Sri Lankan animal rights group called for his rescue and return to Thailand. Thai investigators concluded that the elephant's was poor and that he needed urgent medical care. The elephant will be quarantined and rehabilitated at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center. Whether he will return to Sri Lanka is still under discussion.
