For first time ever, ‘exceptional drought’ declared by Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer District

SUMMARY: The Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District has declared a Stage 4 Exceptional Drought, imposing tougher water-saving measures for well operators. This unprecedented move was prompted by alarmingly low water levels at the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer, which serves as a drinking water source for over 60,000 people. The decline in water levels has led to significant pumping restrictions and permanent reclassification for certain permittees, starting in 2024. The only way to reverse the drought conditions is a sustained period of widespread, significant rainfall. Until then, people are asked to conserve water, limiting groundwater use to essential indoor demands only, with no water used for outdoor purposes.
