Houston bike share program, BCycle, shuts down after financial woes, usership declining, senior VP says
SUMMARY: Houston’s bike share system, BCycle, has ceased operations due to financial difficulties. Riders were left stranded, unaware of the closure. The program, which once had 300,000 users in 2020, saw a sharp decline to under 50,000 users by 2024. Efforts to sustain it with a $500,000 city grant came too late. METRO is exploring new options for bike share programs. A survey revealed significant declines in public transportation usage in Harris County since 2020. Around ten BCycle employees will lose their jobs, and the city might sell the bike share equipment it purchased through a grant.

The committee will not disclose discussion topics but may enter executive session. This committee also investigated and led to the expulsion of Rep. Bryan Slaton for sexual misconduct. The meeting, chaired by Rep. Andrew Murr (not seeking reelection), draws high interest due to its past actions.
