Free Food Bank Giveaway; Monday November 20th
SUMMARY: A free holiday food distribution event is scheduled for November 20th at the University of North Texas at Dallas, from 9 am to noon. Families can receive up to 60 pounds of groceries without needing identification, but they will be asked for their name, family size, and zip code. The event is in partnership with the North Texas Food Bank, Tom Thumb/Albertson’s grocery stores, and UT Dallas. This comes as a recent USDA report shows increasing food insecurity in the U.S., with Texas ranking as the second hungriest state and Dallas County having the 4th-highest number of food-insecure children. The distribution will take place at the UNT Dallas campus in southern Dallas.

How Austin enforces its fireworks ordinance
SUMMARY: Since Austin adopted its fireworks ordinance, the storage, use, and handling of fireworks within city limits became illegal. Initially, the Austin Fire Department (AFD) managed compliance, deploying engine and truck companies to reported violations. However, this approach burdened the emergency response system and 911 dispatchers. In the late 90s, the city shifted to a 311 hotline for reporting non-emergency violations, transitioning responsibility to the Austin Police Department (APD). Despite this change, AFD maintains a street presence, and the Fire Marshal's Office continues to issue citations and prosecute those responsible for fires caused by fireworks.
