Harris County Commissioners Court agenda: Uplift Program’s deadline approaches and officials push for bodycams in the jail

SUMMARY: Harris County in Texas has launched a guaranteed income program called Uplift Harris to provide $500 a month for 18 months to low-income families in the ten highest-poverty zip codes. The program has received over 67,000 applications, far more than the 2,000 participants that will be chosen. Some state lawmakers are questioning the $20.5 million program, but Judge Lina Hidalgo believes in its success. In addition to the income program, Harris County commissioners are pushing for body cameras to be worn by correctional officers in the county jail after nearly 20 inmate deaths in 2023.
