How Austin’s using new video technology to minimize crashes
SUMMARY: The City of Austin's Vision Zero program is using video technology to evaluate and address traffic safety concerns at city intersections. Video analytics are being used to identify safety risks such as near-misses, red light running, and speeding, which may not be revealed through crash data analysis alone. The program has collected data from 26 locations and has used this information to make improvements to high crash rate intersections. The data collected has also been used to inform safety treatment changes such as signal timing adjustments and more visible crosswalks. Additionally, the program is collaborating with researchers to define best practices for video analytics use.
