Immigration reform: Unexpected decline in migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border after Title 42 expired, border officials say

SUMMARY: The end of Title 42, a Trump-era immigration policy, has not resulted in the anticipated surge of asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border. Instead, border officials have seen a 70% drop in crossings in the first month after the policy expired. Several factors may be contributing to this decrease. One is a new policy that requires asylum seekers to show they’ve been denied asylum in every country they’ve traveled through before being considered in the US. Additionally, cartels charging high fees and separating families, as well as technical issues with a new app called CBP One, may be deterring migrants. It remains uncertain whether the trend will continue or if there will be a spike in crossings in the future.
