Is AI weather model the forecasting future?
SUMMARY: Google debuted their GraphCast AI weather computer model for weather forecasting. UT Austin Professor Liang Yang discusses the benefits and potential flaws of the model with KXAN Meteorologist Nick Bannin. Yang considers the model to be a revolutionary development in AI weather modeling and holds promise, especially given Google’s track record in AI applications. The model is performing well in a critical ten-day forecast test, showing more accurate results than other best weather models. However, Yang also acknowledges that AI may struggle with unprecedented events and changes, so human meteorologists will continue to provide context, interpretation, and adaptability in such cases.
