SUMMARY: Auto thefts in Austin have increased by 23% from January to May 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, with a total of 2,586 thefts. Detective Julian Ogle of the Austin Police Department's auto theft interdiction unit noted that Hyundai and Kia vehicles are particularly targeted. Many of the suspects are juveniles. South Austin recorded the highest number of auto thefts, with 439. There is a backlog of investigations, and more detectives would be helpful. Increased patrol presence could lead to more vehicle recoveries. Various sectors in Austin have seen significant increases in auto thefts.
