Lago Vista employee accused of not reporting 16-year-old son’s death, burying him
SUMMARY: Veronica Soriano, an employee with the City of Lago Vista, has been charged with tampering with physical evidence involving a human corpse, in relation to the death of her handicapped 16-year-old son. After a welfare check, officials were unable to find the boy. Soriano later told Child Protective Services that her son was dead but was not ready to discuss it. Authorities found the body on a piece of property, covered in a white powdery substance, and in a state of decomposition. Shovels, a pickaxe, and a bottle filled with white powder were found in Soriano's car. Autopsy results are pending.

Texas House ethics panel to meet for first time since Paxton impeachment
SUMMARY: The Texas House of Representatives ethics committee will hold a public hearing on July 17, its first since the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton. The Texas Committee on General Investigating hasn't met since May 28, 2022, when it issued subpoenas for the Paxton probe. Paxton was accused of misconduct and later acquitted by the Texas Senate. The committee will not disclose discussion topics but may enter executive session. This committee also investigated and led to the expulsion of Rep. Bryan Slaton for sexual misconduct. The meeting, chaired by Rep. Andrew Murr (not seeking reelection), draws high interest due to its past actions.

Austin Animal Center shuts down intake, says shelter at ‘crisis point,’ memo says
SUMMARY: The Austin Animal Center (AAC) is closing animal intake to the public due to reaching critical capacity, as stated in a memo from AAC Chief Animal Services Officer Don Bland. Effective July 2, the center will stop accepting owner-surrendered and healthy stray animals but will continue to take in animals that pose a public safety risk or have life-threatening conditions. Currently, AAC is dealing with an influx, averaging 14 more animals weekly than it can find homes for. To address this, they are using private boarding facilities and working with foster and rescue organizations, while also waiving adoption fees. For assistance, residents should contact 311. Intake will reopen once appropriate kennel space is available.
