Man faces arson charge following downtown high-rise fire
SUMMARY: A man named John Heinrich Meyer, 28, has been arrested and charged in connection with a high-rise fire in downtown Austin. He faces charges of arson intended to damage a habitat and a terroristic threat. The incident was reported by a 911 caller who saw someone setting boxes on fire on a balcony. Austin Police arrived at the scene and identified Meyer through witness testimonies and management. Authorities found Meyer's apartment ransacked and determined that the fires originated from two areas in the apartment. The fire caused approximately $360,000 in damages to the building, activating the sprinkler system and causing water damage to multiple floors. Meyer is currently in custody with a total bond of $120,000.

How Austin enforces its fireworks ordinance
SUMMARY: Since Austin adopted its fireworks ordinance, the storage, use, and handling of fireworks within city limits became illegal. Initially, the Austin Fire Department (AFD) managed compliance, deploying engine and truck companies to reported violations. However, this approach burdened the emergency response system and 911 dispatchers. In the late 90s, the city shifted to a 311 hotline for reporting non-emergency violations, transitioning responsibility to the Austin Police Department (APD). Despite this change, AFD maintains a street presence, and the Fire Marshal's Office continues to issue citations and prosecute those responsible for fires caused by fireworks.
