Ohio backs off proposed restrictions on gender-affirming care for adults – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

SUMMARY: Ohio's Department of and Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services issued revised proposals Wednesday backing off plans to restrict gender-affirming medical treatment for adults, following public comment. New versions of the rules will only apply to the care of minors, not adults. Patients under 18 will still need at least six months of mental health counseling before receiving gender-affirming medications or surgeries, but the list of qualified professionals has expanded. While LGBTQ+ advocates welcomed the changes, concerns about the remaining provisions remain. Therefore, agencies are urged to rescind the draft rules entirely. Ohio lawmakers have already banned gender-affirming surgeries and hormone therapies for minors, which will take effect in April.
