SUMMARY: A skunk found in Southwest Arlington, Texas, has tested positive for rabies, according to the Texas Department of State Services. The city's Animal Services caught the skunk and removed it from the area. No exposures to the skunk have been reported. The city warned that skunks are usually active at night, so if anyone sees a skunk acting injured or disoriented during the day, they should report it to Animal Services as it may be rabid. Rabies is a fatal disease, and anyone exposed to the virus must receive post-exposure injections. Pet owners are reminded to vaccinate their dogs and cats against rabies, and livestock owners are encouraged to discuss vaccination with a veterinarian. If anyone comes across a rabid animal, they should not approach it and should report it to Animal Services.

SUMMARY: In Texas, residents have observed an unusual rise in fly populations, particularly exacerbated in recent years. The phenomenon, discussed by Central Texans on Reddit, aligns with insights from Texas AgriLife Entomologist Wizzie Brown. She explains that the state's warm climate supports year-round fly activity, with heat accelerating their life cycle, leading to rapid population growth. Climate change is likely worsening the issue, as higher temperatures benefit flies and expand their habitable areas. To manage the infestation, Brown suggests regular trash removal, using outdoor garbage bins, and cleaning these bins with dish soap to eliminate fly-attracting odors.
