Over two-thirds of the 45,000 U.S. children treated for pink eye in 2021 received antibiotic eye drops, although the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends against such routine prescriptions. Pink eye is often viral and self-resolving without antibiotics; even mild bacterial cases typically resolve independently. Only 4% required a follow-up visit regardless of treatment. Eye clinics, which prescribe fewer antibiotics, have better diagnostic tools, while doctors, aiming to alleviate parental concerns, often overprescribe. Supportive measures, not antibiotics, are usually sufficient.
