SUMMARY: The Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office has established a new narcotics unit focusing on cases involving fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and more due to the fentanyl epidemic tightening its grip on North Texas. The unit includes three prosecutors and will work closely with law enforcement to pursue drug cases. Fort Worth police records show almost 2500 overdoses in Tarrant County in 2023, many caused by fentanyl. The new law, House Bill 6, allows for tougher penalties for importing fentanyl, even charging those supplying the drug with murder if it leads to someone’s death. Overdose deaths involving fentanyl have risen, with more than 106,000 overdose deaths reported in the US between May 2022 and May 2023.

In the late 90s, the city shifted to a 311 hotline for reporting non-emergency violations, transitioning responsibility to the Austin Police Department (APD). Despite this change, AFD maintains a street presence, and the Fire Marshal's Office continues to issue citations and prosecute those responsible for fires caused by fireworks.
