Texas’ authority to arrest migrants divides asylum-seekers, community
SUMMARY: Concerns about Texas' new authority to question and detain migrants are mixed. Some believe waiting for appointments and coming in legally is best, while others fear increased enforcement will push migrants to turn to smugglers, risking their lives. The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed Texas to enforce a law empowering police officers to arrest those who cross the border illegally, sparking debate between lawmakers. El Paso's mayor focuses on public health and safety, while asylum-seekers worry about the impact of the new law. Overall, the situation remains tense and uncertain for migrants and authorities in the border region.
