Texas special session 2023: Lawmakers debate school vouchers in face of rural Republican, Democratic opposition

SUMMARY: In an upcoming special session in Texas, the focus is on education, particularly the push for school vouchers or Education Savings Accounts, which would allow parents to use public money to send their children to private or homeschools. The legislation faces opposition from Democrats and rural Republicans in the House, who view it as a scheme. State Senator Carol Alvarado believes that vouchers would harm public schools, which are already underfunded and underpaying teachers. Senate Bill 2, introduced by State Senator Brandon Creighton, aims to increase school safety funding, allocate more funds to school budgets, and provide across-the-board raises for Texas teachers. Other agenda items in the special session include doing away with mandatory COVID-19 vaccines for private employers and increasing resources on the border. State Representative Tom Oliverson has proposed empowering local law enforcement along the border to act as immigration officers, with the intention of returning apprehended individuals to Mexico at a port of entry. The special session can last up to 30 days, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott has the power to call more sessions until the start of the next regular session in January 2025.

SUMMARY: Rafah, a city in the Gaza Strip, has become a deserted, war-ravaged area following a two-month Israeli military invasion targeting Hamas, their final stronghold in Gaza. Abandoned buildings and rubble dominate the landscape, with few civilians remaining. Israel alleges that Hamas turned civilian areas into combat zones, creating deadly traps. Approximately 1.4 million Palestinians fled to Rafah, now reduced to around 50,000 under dire conditions in a “humanitarian area.” Aid efforts are stalled, with dangerous routes and limited access to resources. The humanitarian crisis worsens as Israel pushes forward its offensive, despite significant challenges in aid delivery and civilian survival.
