Venezuelans become largest nationality to illegally cross US-Mexico border as September numbers surge

SUMMARY: Venezuelans have become the largest nationality arrested for illegally crossing the U.S. border, surpassing Mexicans for the first time on record. In September alone, Venezuelans were arrested 54,833 times, more than double the number in August and well above the previous monthly high. Overall, arrests of all nationalities crossing from Mexico totaled 218,763 in September, approaching an all-time high. Venezuela's political, economic, and humanitarian crisis has pushed over 7 million people to leave, with many settling in the United States in recent years. The Biden administration recently announced temporary legal status for nearly 500,000 Venezuelans already in the U.S.
