Voters pass increase for retired public education workers, but future shortfalls likely to emerge
SUMMARY: Texas voters approved a state constitutional amendment that will provide funding for a cost-of-living adjustment to the Teacher Retirement System, resulting in a victory for the Texas Retired Teachers Association. The amendment emerged as a result of the state legislature passing Senate Bill 10 in May. The overwhelming support for the amendment in the legislative process and at the ballot box indicates its bipartisan nature. The amendment will aid retirees who have struggled financially due to inflation and lack of regular raises. More work will need to be done in the future to ensure continued fiscal stability for retirement benefits. The issue is important for current and future public education workers as well as retirees.
