What is a heat dome? Scorching temperatures in Texas are expected to spread to the north and east
SUMMARY: Scorching temperatures caused by a “heat dome” are straining the Texas power grid and are predicted to bring record highs to the state. The heat is expected to expand to other parts of the US, including Kansas City, Oklahoma, the Mississippi Valley, the western Florida Panhandle, and parts of Alabama. Temperatures of around 110 degrees Fahrenheit are forecast in parts of western Texas, with no relief expected before the Fourth of July holiday. The heat wave is caused by a combination of high pressure, warm air in the Gulf of Mexico, and intense sunlight. Vulnerable populations are particularly at risk.

Sotomayor’s dissent: Supreme Court’s liberal justices warn of law-free zone stemming from Trump immunity ruling
SUMMARY: In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court decided 6-3 that former presidents have immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts while in office, but not for unofficial acts. Justice Sonia Sotomayor's dissent expressed deep concern, arguing it creates near-absolute presidential immunity, potentially leading to abuses of power. The ruling influences the delay in Donald Trump's 2020 election subversion case as courts discern which actions are protected. Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson joined Sotomayor, stressing the long-term impact on constitutional democracy. Chief Justice John Roberts defended the decision, emphasizing the necessity of presidential powers while cautioning against routine prosecutions of ex-presidents.

How to look up crime statistics in Austin, new dashboards in APD data portal
SUMMARY: New crime statistics are now available through interactive dashboards on the Austin Police Department's data portal. At a Public Safety Commission meeting, an APD data team member demonstrated the various dashboards. Five of the 16 planned dashboards are live, detailing cadets in training, retirements, calls for service, and response times. KXAN had previously reported on the initial dashboard covering high-level crimes. These new dashboards stem from a 2023 city council resolution. A snapshot of calls for service from 2019 to present is also provided, but there's no timeline for the completion of the remaining dashboards.

Texas baseball adds highly touted Arizona State pitcher in transfer portal
SUMMARY: Texas baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle strengthened the pitching staff by recruiting Arizona State’s Thomas Burns through the transfer portal. Burns, the first freshman since 2006 to start a season opener for the Sun Devils, announced his move to Austin on social media. Despite an injury-shortened season, Burns showed promise with a 1-1 record, 4.75 ERA, and 39 strikeouts in 30.1 innings. Previously ranked as Wisconsin’s No. 2 pitcher by Prep Baseball Report, Burns joins several confirmed Longhorns commits for next season, including Will Gasparino, Kimble Schuessler, Max Belyeu, Rylan Galvan, Ace Whitehead, and Max Grubbs.
