Wild hogs still going wild in Texas — what can be done?
SUMMARY: Deer hunters in Texas are likely to encounter feral hogs this season. While Texas has the largest population, 6.9 million feral hogs roam across the U.S. Their presence has significant impacts on agriculture, livestock, and humans. However, trapping, aerial gunning, and using a toxicant are effective methods to control their population. Research on the use of warfarin-based toxicant has shown promising results. Concerns over contamination from carcasses or water supplies have been addressed. With a high reproductive rate, feral hog populations are tough to control. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department suggests that Spanish explorers likely introduced hogs to Texas over 300 years ago.
