1.2 terabytes stolen in Dallas ransomware attack
SUMMARY: City leaders will be receiving a report today detailing the extent of damage caused by a ransomware attack earlier this year. An internal review found that hackers stole 1.2TB of data from the city, equivalent to over 800,000 digital files. The attack took city services offline for weeks and damaged equipment and software for 100 servers. Personal information of at least 30,000 people was exposed, including their full names, addresses, social security numbers, and insurance information. The hacker group Royal claimed responsibility for the attack, but it is unknown what demands were made or if they were met. The city has allocated $8.6 million for improved security software.
