Advocates call on Austin City Council to add more community investments to proposed budget | FOX 7 A

SUMMARY: Advocates are calling on the city for more support and investment in permanent supportive housing to address homelessness beyond temporary shelter. They argue that while short-term emergency strategies are important, they are not enough for a long-term solution. Mayor Kirk Watson's recent announcement of funds for temporary shelter from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs is not sufficient. Advocates propose that funds should also be directed towards eviction prevention, harm reduction, and completion of permanent housing units. They argue that increasing policing alone is insufficient and that only permanent housing can effectively reduce homelessness. The city is working on increasing permanent housing units and has allocated a budget of $56 million to address homelessness, including a cleanup schedule for homeless camps.

Activists also say progress on permanent support housing isn't being prioritized. They say the budget adds $32 million to the police department, which they say isn't effective at addressing homeless and drug use.

Currently, it’s a beautiful night, but within 24 hours, tropical storm force winds from Barrel will begin around 2 PM Sunday, with stronger impacts expected by sunset. By Monday morning, Barrel is anticipated to make its third and final landfall near Matagorda Bay and Port Lavaca. Evacuations are underway, and all hotels, including ours in Port O’Connor, are closing. The region could face up to six feet of storm surge. Stay updated via the Click2Houston app and the Storm Tracker app for real-time alerts and live updates. We’ll continue monitoring the situation through the night.

KPRC 2’s Gage Goulding is in Port Lavaca and gives an update on current conditions a day before Beryl is forecasted to make landfall in the area.
