SUMMARY: Freezing temperatures have caused hundreds of bats to fall from their perches on bridges in Austin, Texas. The nonprofit organization Austin Bat Refuge is working to save as many of the Mexican free-tailed and southern yellow bat species as possible. They are using special techniques to warm the bats up and nurse them back to . The organization urges the public not to pick up bats with bare hands and to call them immediately for assistance. Nearly 400 bats have been brought in, and close to 100 are expected to survive, but the organization fears the death toll will rise in the coming days as the temperatures warm up. Once the bats are deemed healthy, they will be released back to the bridges where they were found. Those that did not survive will be sent to labs for scientific research. The organization is doing everything possible to help the bats, but many have already died from the extreme cold.

The Austin Bat Refuge said hundreds of bats were killed due to the recent freeze in Central Texas.
