Austin opioid overdose outbreak: Nearly 80 overdoses since Monday | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: 79 overdoses with as many as nine deaths occurred within a week, possibly due to fentanyl-related drugs. The spike in overdoses was the largest since dealing with K2 in 2015. New classes of opioids like the nine class have been emerging, leading to a movement away from heroin towards counterfeit pills mixed with fentanyl. Authorities in Williamson County and Texas against fentanyl are urging residents to stay vigilant and consider evidence-based solutions like decriminalizing drug paraphernalia and increasing overdose awareness training. There is still much unknown about the recent overdose event, but efforts are being made to gather actionable information.
One suspect is in custody in connection with this week's deadly drug overdoses in Austin. ATCEMS says, since Monday, nearly 80 people have overdosed in the city.

Biden says Supreme Court ruling on immunity means ‘no limits’ on presidential actions
SUMMARY: President Biden criticized the Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling granting former President Trump and other presidents broad immunity from prosecution for official acts while in office. Biden argued that the decision dangerously removes legal constraints on presidential power. The Court's ruling provides no immunity for unofficial acts, but Federal prosecutors now must distinguish between official and unofficial conduct. Trump, who faces prosecution for attempts to overturn the 2020 election and his role in the January 6th insurrection, called the decision a victory for democracy. The Court's liberal justices dissented, warning it creates a law-free zone around the president, potentially impacting other ongoing cases against Trump.
Biden condemned the ruling, stating that the Supreme Court's decision on immunity means “there are virtually no limits” on a president's actions.

SCOTUS rules on presidential immunity | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: On the final day of its term, the Supreme Court issued a significant ruling affecting Donald Trump and possibly all former and future presidents regarding prosecution for actions taken while in office. In a 6-3 decision, the Court granted former presidents broad protections for their official acts, complicating Special Counsel Jack Smith's election interference case against Trump. Chief Justice John Roberts stated that a president might not be prosecuted for exercising core constitutional powers, while Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented, arguing it undermines the principle that no one is above the law. The decision has spurred significant backlash from Democrats.
The Supreme Court ruled on presidential immunity, and the decision came down to ideological lines. For now, Former President Donald Trump's election interference case remains on hold.
