Austin Watershed addressing toxic algae with second round of treatment | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: On Monday and Tuesday, Austin Watershed will be conducting a second round of treatment in the water to reduce the amount of phosphorus, which is a key food source for harmful algae. The city has already seen a decrease in algae in Lady Bird Lake after the first round of clay treatment in June. However, there is still some algae present, so caution is advised. It is important to rinse off yourself and your pets if you come into contact with the water. This treatment is part of a five-year pilot program to lower phosphorus levels and address harmful algae blooms that have been occurring since 2019. While there have been mixed results in the past, there is some improvement observed in recent months. It is safe to be at the lake during the treatment but keep your distance from the barge that will be spraying the treatment material, as it will temporarily make the water cloudy.
