SUMMARY: The Texas Center for the Missing, established in March 2000 in Greater Houston, was founded by Dorene Wise after her 17-year-old son, Gabriel Lester, went missing and was later found deceased. The nonprofit, led by CEO Mel Turnquist, aims to aid families in similar situations through education, law enforcement training, and guiding families. With 11,000 new cases and only 18 investigators in the Greater Houston area last year, the center focuses on appropriate alert activation to ensure public attention. They provide resources such as flyer creation and support groups, emphasizing the importance of immediate reporting and public alert response. The center continues Gabriel's legacy to reunite missing persons with their families.

In this week's “Missing in Texas,” we're taking a look at a nonprofit dedicated to helping families of missing loved ones, and how a case in Austin inspired a mother to start the organization.
