SUMMARY: Hurricane Barrel, currently a Category 3 storm, is impacting the Cayman Islands, where hurricane warnings are in place. It affected Jamaica previously and weakened due to wind shear. The National Hurricane Center’s forecast remains largely unchanged, predicting a landfall in far south Texas. Barrel is expected to weaken to a Category 2 hurricane as it moves across the Yucatan Peninsula and into a tropical storm over the southern Gulf. Warm Gulf waters might strengthen it back to a Category 1 hurricane before a possible early week landfall. Future paths include potential impacts on North Texas, with the heaviest rains predicted for central and far south Texas.
