Dallas city leaders compromise on new housing development plan
SUMMARY: Dallas city planners are looking to increase housing amidst homeowner concerns about preserving single-family neighborhood integrity. The Dallas City Plan Commission reached a compromise, rejecting a proposal to allow multiplexes in single-family zones. Instead, they allowed multiplexes as a secondary use with City Council approval. This change aims to balance creating attainable housing and protecting neighborhoods from gentrification. The plan, Forward Dallas, includes exploring tiny homes as a housing solution. Commissioner Melissa Kingston emphasized the need for a fair response balancing homeowners' investments and housing advocates' demands. The plan will continue evolving before presentation to the City Council potentially in August.
City leaders had originally proposed allowing multiplexes to be built in neighborhoods zoned for one lot and one home, which would bring an end to single-family zoning. The city planning commission disagreed with that proposal.
