Dallas has a new way to report car break-ins
SUMMARY: Dallas has seen a rise in vehicle thefts, leading to long wait times for police reports. The average response time is currently 12 hours, which is deemed unacceptable by the police department. To address this issue, DPD has launched a new reporting system where victims can have a video chat with an officer instead of waiting for an in-person meeting. The department's goal is to respond in less than two hours. The report will then go to the auto theft unit, which is made up of 12 officers. The department acknowledges the connection between property crime and violent crime, as illustrated by a recent incident where a man was shot and killed while chasing down his family's stolen truck. The new reporting system is currently in a trial period. This year, Dallas police will record more than 18,000 auto thefts.
The city of Dallas saw a sharp rise in vehicle thefts this year. That also means the wait times to file a report are unbearably long for victims. FOX 4's Shannon Murray has a look at what the police department is doing about it.
